Muscles responsible for the facial expression are contracted when they receive neurotransmitters released from a nerve cell in a process known as neuronal exocytosis at the neuromuscular synapsis. An overstimulation of the facial muscles, due to an excess of these chemical signals, leads to a greater skin strain. After the age of 30, first wrinkles start to appear as a consequence of such muscle contractions. The neurotransmitter involved is acetylcholine and it is released from a vesicle into the synapse. The process involves several proteins, channels and vesicles. The SNARE protein complex is essential for neurotransmitter release at the synapsis and mediates the final steps of exocytosis. It is a complex formed by three proteins: VAMP, Syntaxin and SNAP-25. This complex is like a cellular hook that captures vesicles (a process called docking) and brings them close to the membrane to enable their fusion. SNARE complex is essential for the muscle contraction. Any agents inhibit the release of excess neurotransmitters (acetylcholine, catecholamine) or block the formation of SNARE complex are potential muscle relaxing ingredients to reduce expression line wrinkles.

Botox is the best example of using muscle paralyzer (butulium toxin A from bacteria) to treat wrinkles. Botulinum Toxin A paralyses the muscle by selectively blocking acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction. BoNT-A cleaves the protein SNAP-25 irreversibly, and therefore the SNARE complex cannot assemble. The nerve signal cannot be relayed, the muscle cannot contract and it is paralysed. But Botox is not a topical skin care product. It is an injectable dermal filler and has to be prescribed and treated by physician.

Synthetic Snake Venom UltraLuxe-9 Age Control Complex – Sonya Dakar Skincare is the alternative to Botox that relaxes muscle contraction, mimicking how snake venom can paralyze the muscles of its prey. Syn-Ake, as the compound is called, is made from a synthetic tripeptide that copies the effect of a peptide found in the venom of the Temple Viper, found in the Snake Temple of Penang, Malaysia
