Radiesse Review

Healthy young skin contains collagen that gives it volume, flexibility and strength. As part of the aging process, skin’s own natural collagen breaks down, diminishing facial volume. This loss of elasticity and volume results in the wrinkles, facial lines and skin laxity that rob skin of its youthful appearance. The ideal way to achieve wrinkle reduction is by replenishing lost volume.

RADIESSE® wrinkle filler smooth out the signs of aging because RADIESSE wrinkle filler’s unique formulation stimulates collagenesis – the production of new collagen – which results in increased volume for natural looking wrinkle correction that may last a year or more in many patients. The RADIESSE wrinkle filler stimulates the body’s own natural collagen production, instantly corrects wrinkles. Results may last a year or more in many patients. It is FDA approved to enhance patient comfort with lidocaine mixing. In just one syringe, many patients can achieve long-lasting youthful results. Treatment with RADIESSE wrinkle filler is simple, quick, comfortable and convenient, with immediately visible results that last. RADIESSE wrinkle filler can address your specific concerns such as smile lines and marionette lines.

Mechanism of Action

RADIESSE dermal filler is made of unique, patented, calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres suspended in a water-based gel carrier. When injected into the skin, these microspheres initially perform as a filler – they immediately provide facial volume for a soft, natural look. The transformation is noticeable right away. Over time, your body will gradually absorb the gel carrier, but the very tiny, smooth microspheres remain. Once injected, RADIESSE dermal filler starts a process called neocollagenesis, or the creation of new collagen. It stimulates collagen production in your own body and encourages collagen growth around the injection site. In many cases, results may last up to a year or more.

RADIESSE® wrinkle filler is an injectable implant composed of synthetically produced smooth calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres (diameter of 25µm to 45µm) suspended in a sodium carboxymethylcellulose gel carrier. RADIESSE wrinkle filler is approximately 30% CaHA and 70% gel carrier by volume.

RADIESSE wrinkle filler is injected into the skin in a minimally invasive procedure. Injection of the product provides an immediate one-to-one correction of the face wrinkle. The amount of filling or augmentation can be easily placed and controlled for better results. There is no skin sensitivity testing or reconstitution required.

Over time, the gel is absorbed, and fibroblasts appear. The process of neocollagenesis begins, stimulating the gradual growth of the patient’s own collagen. The collagen that forms results in extended correction times and increased patient satisfaction.

The cosmetic results are soft and natural-looking, and feel like the patient’s own tissue. The results are long-lasting, but not permanent. The CaHA microspheres naturally degrade to calcium and phosphate ions, which are metabolized by the body’s normal processes. Here is the step by step explanation of what happens after the injection:

Upon injection, RADIESSE wrinkle filler immediately adds volume to facial features.

1. After two to three months, macrophages start to dissolve the sodium carboxymethylcellulose gel carrier. The CaHA microspheres remain.

2. Macrophages continue to dissolve the gel carrier. Fibroblasts form new collagen.

3. New resident tissue (collagen) surrounds the CaHA microspheres.

4. The CaHA microspheres degrade and are phagocytized and metabolized by macrophages.

5. Even the small fragments of CaHA are decomposed at the implant site, without evidence of migration.
