Antioxidants In Anti-Aging Creams -
Polyphenols
- epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG)
- procyanidins
Green tea polyphenols (epicatechins) have been included in a growing number of skin care products for the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. The most powerful member of this group is called epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG). EGCG is easily pretreating skin to inhibit erythema, myeloperoxidase activity, and inflammation following UVB irradiation. Other polyphenols include procyanidins as those present in the grape seed extract. Grapeseed procyanidins have higher antioxidant activity than both vitamins C and E. The role of polyphenols, whether from green tea, grapeseed extract and other botanicals, has a great deal of potential as part of a growing natural anti-aging skin care market.
