Vitamin C

L-ascorbic acid form of vitamin C is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent. As a valuable antioxidant, it protects skin from photodamage by UVA and UVB. Although oral supplementation may also be useful, topical preparations are able to deliver a higher dosage to the needed area. Topical vitamin C does not absorb or block harmful ultraviolet radiation like a sunscreen. Instead, it augments the skin’s ability to neutralize reactive oxygen species (free-radical damage) that are created by the ultraviolet radiation, thereby preventing photodamage to the skin. Used appropriately, topical vitamin C is an important adjunct to the use of sunscreens, a helpful adjunct or an alternative to Retin-A in the treatment of fine wrinkles (see below), and a stimulant to wound healing.

Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) stimulates natural collagen production. Vitamin C is required for collagen synthesis, which declines markedly in aging skin. As we grow older, we suffer diminished micro capillary circulation within our skin, which deprives our skin cells of the supply of vitamin C it needs for youthful collagen synthesis. The topical application of vitamin C in a skin-penetrating medium can dramatically enhance the availability of vitamin C for collagen production.

Vitamin C is an antioxidant enhancer which actually increases the positive effects of other antioxidants in an anti-aging formulation. Vitamin C regenerates vitamin E in the skin. An antioxidant like vitamin E can only suppress a limited number of free radicals before it runs out of electrons. Vitamin C regenerates vitamin E and enables vitamin E to provide sustained antioxidant protection in the skin’s elastin fibers.

Vitamin C plays a vital role in skin repair. When your skin is injured, its Vitamin C content is used up rapidly in the scavenging of free radicals, and in synthesizing collagen to speed healing. It protects vital cell structures, and reduces blemishes and moisture loss. L-ascorbic acid form of vitamin C has anticancer properties when taken orally.

Ascorbic acid is difficult to stabilize in formulations. Its acid component is a skin irritant. It is stable only in a formulation with a low pH, and that is potentially irritating for skin.

Vitamin C also is an active ingredients in lightening creams where it inhibit the production of the melanin.

Calcium ascorbate is considered a stable form of vitamin C and an antioxidant. Ascorbate (an ion of ascorbic acid), therefore Calcium ascorbate is the salt form of Vitamin C. Calcium ascorbate is the major active ingredients in the trademarked commercial ingredients Ester-C (see detail in below section)

Vitamin C Esters

Vitamin C ester is vitamin C with a fatty acid attached to it, making it fat-soluble. It can rapidly penetrates the skin cell membrane, being much better absorbed than vitamin C alone. Ascorbyl palmitate is the ester of vitamin C and palmitic acid (a C16 saturated fatty acid), therefore is an anti-aging ingredient that gently absorbs into the skin faster than Vitamin C, while not causing redness and irritation like Vitamin C can do. Ascorbyl palmitate is the stable and nonacidic form of vitamin C that is effective as an antioxidant.

This miracle ingredient also is a collagen booster, aiding your skin to produce more collagen to help plump up your skin and give it that glowing appearance. Ascorbyl Palmitate also helps retain water in your skin to keep it extremely moisturized due to its fatty acid component. And here’s another great thing it does – it helps to get rid of age spots and liver spots evening out your skin tone. It helps revive even the dullest skin to a new radiant glow.

Magnesium ascorbyl palmitate is also a stable derivative of vitamin C that can be an effective antioxidant. A moisturizer with a 10% concentration of magnesium ascorbyl phosphate can suppressed melanin formation…. The lightening effect was significant in 19 of 34 patients with chloasma or senile freckles and in 3 of 25 patients with normal skin. One study is not exactly anything to write about, not to mention that at present there are no products on the market that contain 10% magnesium ascorbyl phosphate.
