Linolenic Acid and Linoleic Acid

  • α-Linolenic acid (an ω-3 fatty acid) [18:3 (n-3)]
  • γ-Linolenic acid (an ω-6 fatty acid) [18:3 (n-6)]
  • Linoleic Acid (an ω-6 fatty acid) [18:2 (n-6)]

Linolenic acid is an essential fatty acid found in linseed oil and in most seed fats. α-Linolenic acid  is an ω-3 fatty acid found in many vegetable oils. The unmodified term linolenic acid most commonly refers to this substance. γ-Linolenic acid is an ω-6 fatty acid

Seed oils are the richest sources of α-linolenic acid, notably those of canola, soybeans, walnuts, flaxseed (Linseed oil), perilla, chia, and hemp. α-Linolenic acid is also obtained from the thylakoid membranes of the green leaves of broadleaf plants (the membranes responsible for photosynthesis). Greens, therefore, and animals that eat greens, are often a good source of α-linolenic acid.[citation needed.

γ-Linolenic acid (gamma-linolenic acid or GLA, sometimes called gamoleic acid) is a fatty acid found primarily in vegetable oils. GLA is found in black currant oil or seeds, evening primrose oil, and borage oil.

Gamma linolenic acid (GLA) is used in cosmetics as an emollient, antioxidant, and cell regulator. GLA is considered to promote healthy skin growth and is an anti-inflammatory agent. However, there is no research showing GLA to be effective in the treatment of wrinkles (Sources: British Journal of Dermatology, April 1999, pages 685–688; and Dermatology, 2000, volume 201, number 3, pages 191–195). When taken orally, GLA has been shown to have some anticancer properties, but there is no research showing that that effect translates to skin.

Linoleic acid is used as an emollient and thickening agent in cosmetics. It may also help cell communication and maintain skin-barrier. Besides it has some antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory properties. Products with this ingredient: Clinique All About Eyes
